Tucked into the back of an unassuming stucco strip mall on Glendale Boulevard in Echo Park is pehrspace, a veteran institution in L.A.’s underground music scene.

This tiny venue hosts an eclectic range of musical performances and fine art, with sets from noise bands, folk singers, and experimental electronic composers alike. The walls and entryway are often covered with art, oddly contrasted with the flourescent lights overhead. Sets that draw larger crowds often require listeners to gather close and sit cross-legged on the floor around the musicians. It’s an intimate setting wonderfully contrasted to the gradiose (and sometimes fascistic) stage pageantry of large arenas and music festivals.
