As part of an ongoing study of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the Center for Land Use Interpretation has compiled a list of all the electricity distribution stations in the city of L.A. These are recognizable buildings, probably because they’re so nondescript–you may pass one on your way to work every day and never think about it. Most of them are peach-colored windowless boxes with a a few minimal architectural details slapped on, the historical pastiche designed to make the buildings disappear into the built landscape of a neighborhood. And yet, these little boxes power our lights, keep us cool in hot weather, and allow us to stay wired and plugged-in day in and day out.
