JULIEN CECCALDI’S ‘LESS THAN DUST’

Last night artist Julien Ceccaldi was at Ooga Twooga (aka 356 Mission), the satellite space to art/zine/book/clothing store Ooga Booga, to talk about his recent work and sign a zine of new comics titled Less Than Dust. The zine features Ceccaldi’s iconic muscular, pointy-chinned women and pig-faced men embroiled in millenial melodrama.

According to his website, Ceccaldi “produces comics in small editions with narratives centered on manga heroines trying to maintain the facade of a thriving self.” He has shown in Los Angeles, Berlin, New York, Geneva, and Montreal. His work was also featured on the June 2014 cover of Artforum.

This week we started off with some documentation of Another Cats Show at 356 Mission, Los Angeles, announced an evening of powerpoint presentations at Machine Project by the Los Angeles Seminary for Civic and Embodied Art (LASECA), shared photographs from the Peter Hujar exhibition at Maureen Paley in London, watched the 1959 film The Savage Eye, shared images of the Lucio Fontana exhibition at MAM, announced Margaret Lee’s exhibition at The Green Gallery in Chicago, and announced the performance building: a simulacrum of power at Clockshop this weekend.

ANOTHER CATS SHOW

Screen Shot 2014-08-17 at 6.41.12 PMIn the wake of this summer’s Alex Katz exhibition at 356 Mission, and last summer’s popular The Cat Show at White Columns in NYC, is Another Cats Show at 356 Mission. The exhibition opened on Saturday night, and as predicted, and confirmed by the turnout – people love cats!

The exhibition features hundreds of artworks centered on the theme of these furry lil’ felines – cat paintings, cat sculptures, cat ceramics, cat video art, … It’s pretty incredible – a museum of cat art. ‘Another Cats Show’ is on view until September 14th, and is definitely worth checking out.
