TWIN PEAKS AT MOMA

Is TWIN PEAKS 2017 a television series or a movie?

“David Lynch’s latest TWIN PEAKS season is simply unclassifiable: something totally and spectacularly unique. However as the chief curator of film, and not television, at MoMA, I will simply say that my opinion on the matter can be interpreted through the fact that I have invited it to be screened at the Museum. Interpret that how you will, and we hope you will join us in this debate by experiencing this incredible work on the big screen for free this January.” — Rajendra Roy*

ARTAUD IN THE BLACK LODGE

REDCAT is wrapping up its 2017 New Original Works festival with three performances of ARTAUD IN THE BLACK LODGE, which draws a musical-lyrical line from the great avant-garde dramatist/poet/director through the work of William S. Burroughs and David Lynch, and back again. This collaboration between composer David T. Little, librettist/poet Anne Waldman, the Isaura String Quartet, the operatic rock band Timur and The Dime Museum, and director Lydia Steier sounds like the highlight of the summer.

Also on the bill: BUTCH BALLET—writer/director Gina Young’s “love letter to female masculinity”—performed, sans ballet, with love and brilliance by Gino Conti, Jenn Crockett, Eli Eileen, Jess Imme, and CT Treibel; and C, a movement/video piece by Luis Lara Malvacías and Jeremy Nelson.*

ARTAUD IN THE BLACK LODGE, BUTCH BALLET, and C, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, August 10, 11, and 12. All shows at 8:30 pm.

REDCAT, DISNEY HALL, Music Center, downtown Los Angeles.

TWIN PEAKS: THE ENTIRE MYSTERY

photo 2

Last night I attended the premiere of Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery, a DVD collection of deleted and alternate scenes from the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, at the Vista Theater in Los Angeles. David Lynch introduced the evening with a little speech. It began, “There is an abundance of fish in the sea, but tonight I would like to talk about wood…” He ended, “It is only natural that trees are growing and are made of wood. Quite often when we are talking about beauty, we are talking about wood.”

Amazing!

These deleted scenes formed an alternative film of their own, lasting around 90 minutes. I am a huge fan of the television show and the movie, so it was a real treat to be a part of the first public audience to view this new compilation, which will be available to the masses on July 29, 2014. The deleted scenes show us more of The Black Lodge, shed additional light on Laura Palmer’s illicit behavior, and contain more humorous moments in a style only David Lynch and the characters of his Twin Peaks are capable of.
