The FI:AF CinéSalon series LOUIS GARREL—LOVE SONGS AND HEARTBREAK will kick off this week with the Garrel-directed short Mes copains, followed by Dans Paris, the 2006 feature directed by Christophe Honoré. 

The following weeks will feature La jalousie (2013, directed by Louis’ father Philippe), and rare screenings of Garrel’s short La règle de trois (2011), Un château en Italie (2013, directed by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), Garrel’s feature Les deux amis (2015), the 45-minute film Petit tailleur (2010, Louis Garrel), and Honoré’s Les chansons d’amour (2007).

BIRKIN — GAINSBOURG — WAINWRIGHT

Jane Birkin is in New York City for a February 1st show at Carnegie Hall. Earlier in the week, she will join Elia Einhorn for a public conversation at the French Institute, followed by a Q&A and book signing of ATTACHMENTS, a collaboration with her longtime friend, photographer Gabrielle Crawford.

At Carnegie Hall, Birkin will perform BIRKIN / GAINSBOURG—LE SYMPHONIQUE. This tribute to her late husband Serge Gainsbourg will feature a special appearance by Rufus Wainwright.

The Wordless Music Orchestra will back up the singers, with arrangements and piano by Nobuyuki Nakajima. The evening’s artistic direction is by Philippe Lerichomme.

GODARD’S GRANDEUR ET DÉCADENCE

Godard expert Richard Brody and the French Institute present the newly restored GRANDEUR ET DÉCADENCE D’UN PETIT COMMERCE DE CINÉMA (1986), directed by Jean-Luc Godard, and previously unreleased in American cinemas.

Both a warning and a love letter to film—yet made for television—Grandeur was photographed by Caroline Champetier, and screens as part of the series CAROLINE CHAMPETIER—SHAPING THE LIGHT.

CAROLINE CHAMPETIER IN CONVERSATION

Caroline Champetier—the great director of photography for Godard, for Akerman and Rivette, for von Trotta and Desplechin—is in New York to present two of the films for which she served as cinematographer, and participate in a post-screening Q & A and reception.

The screenings are part of the ongoing CAROLINE CHAMPETIER—SHAPING THE LIGHT retrospective at the French Institute.

SOPHIE CALLE IN TIMES SQUARE

This month, VOIR LA MER—five video portraits by Sophie Calle, shot in Istanbul—will be on view nightly just before midnight on the electronic billboards above Times Square.

This presentation is part of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) festival Crossing the Line, in conjunction with the FIAF retrospective Caroline Champetier: Shaping the Light. Champetier was Calle’s cinematographer for VOIR LA MER.
