PERFORMANCE: SISTER SPIT AT THE HAMMER

unnamed-4

Last week Sister Spit, the legendary queer feminist literary collective, packed the Annex of the Hammer Museum for a rousing program of readings and recitations. The night was hosted by Virgie Tovar, who did a hilarious mock TED talk about the dangers of diet culture. Kate Schatz and Miriam Stahl Klein, the author and illustrator of Rad American Women A-Z, discussed their “explosive” feminist children’s book. Some of the artwork from the book can be seen above.

Video artist Zackary Drucker read an unpublished short story about a rich, older transgender woman coping with the current “schism” in American transgender experience, in honor of International Trans* Visibility Day. Special guest Francesca Lia Block, best known for her young adult novels, read a series of poems titled “How to Fall in Love” that grew out of an email exchange between a friend. Myriam Gurba, Nikki Darling, and Thomas Page McBee each read poems that were personal and empowering, erotic and hilarious.

Step and Repeat is a multi-disciplinary program of performance art, music, comedy, and poetry that marks MOCA’s return to live arts programming, a crucial part of the museum’s historical identity. Stretching across four Saturdays this fall, Step and Repeat will present voices from across the United States, with a special focus on the burgeoning performance communities in Los Angeles. Step and Repeat builds on the success of MOCAtv, which over the past two years has transcended its original role as a producer of online content to become one of the most daring digital platforms for performance art, comedy, music, video art, and youth culture. The goal of Step and Repeat is to celebrate the hybrid, convergent, nascent spirit of art today, to collapse some categories, and to explore new directions in artistic practices.

ANTIEPITHALAMIA BY JOHN TOTTENHAM

Epithalamium: A song or poem in honor of a bride and bridegroom.

Antiepithalamia & Other Poems of Regret and Resentment is John Tottenham‘s second book of poetry, a sequence of mean-spirited love poems, paying particular respect to the institution of marriage, and a meditation on the subjects of regret and resentment. Morbid, bitter, self-pitying… perhaps, but offered in the spirit of giving as a tonic to those who are not blissfully content in love and work, and as a bracing antidote to the disease of unconvincing positivity that seems to infect almost every area of contemporary culture.
