WEPRODUCTIONS

3 (1)

This is the last week to view the Printed Matter exhibition WEPRODUCTIONS, a celebration of the imprint co-run by Telfer Stokes and Helen Douglas over the last forty years.

4 (1)

“Organized by Douglas, the exhibition draws from extensive archival material to examine the working methods, surrounding context, and emergent themes (narrative, place, the natural world) that shaped the output of the press from the early 1970s through to the 2010s…

“The exhibition includes the early bookworks of Douglas and Stokes, charting the confluence as the two joined up in 1974 to produce collaborative large-edition offset publications. Solo offset editions by both artists are also examined as well as the smaller, digitally printed books, concertinas, and scrolls by Douglas.”*

This weekend Ooga Booga, 8-Ball Community, and Bunny Jr. present L.A. PAGES, a book fair for independent publishers on the West Coast. This edition of the fair is dedicated to the late Shannon Michael Cane of Printed Matter.

“Shannon was a dedicated organizer and huge supporter of the publishing community, and his devotion inspired us to keep his hard work and legacy alive. [L.A. PAGES will] celebrate the West Coast independent publishing and art books community in an all-inclusive, non-commercial way. It will be entirely run by volunteers, music and food by local Los Angeles vendors, no brand sponsorships, and drop-off tables free of commissions run by us.” – Jezenia Romero, of Bunny Jr.*

Yanga will perform at the opening night fundraiser dinner/dance on Thursday, and musical events will continue throughout the weekend with appearances by The Black CongressÉ Arenas, and Jazzy Romero.

Friday night will feature a festival of shorts curated by 8-Ball TV.

See Printed Matter link below for full list of participating publishers and information on new fundraising editions by Sonya Sombreuil, Milano Chow, Devin Troy Strother, Jeffrey Cheung, Cali Dewitt, Barry McGee, Kate Hall, Jen Shear, and Kandis Williams.

PANSY BEAT AT PRINTED MATTER

pansy-beat-12

PANSY BEAT – “a short-lived fanzine published by Michael Economy in New York from 1989 to 1990 – offered a glimpse into an exhilarating alternative universe during the darkest years of the AIDS crisis.

Lady Bunny, Billy Erb, Connie Fleming, Kenny Kenny, Lady Miss Kier, and Larry Tee first shared their memorable selves in print on the pages of the zine, which also featured interviews with Edwige Belmore, Leigh Bowery, and Quentin Crisp.”*

The new book PANSY BEAT reprints all five issues of the zine, and includes new photographs and artwork. The volume was designed by Jan Wandrag, and the launch on Friday will feature a video presentation with Maxxx Pleasure and Billy Beyond.
