Contort Yourself is a group exhibition currently on view at Kayne Griffin Corcoran in Los Angeles. It features the work of four Glaswegian artists: Luke Fowler, Jim Lambie, Sue Tompkins, and Jonnie Wilkes, curated by The Modern Institute, Glasgow. The press release states that this group show is in fact an assembly of solo exhibitions by each of the artists. The large spacious gallery allows each artist’s work the room to breath. Sue Tompkins’ colorful paintings develop out of a process of interpreting words and language, and Jim Lambie’s installation of mirrored ladders is rooted in a deep interest in color theory, and a consideration for space and the surrounding environment.

The most exciting piece in the exhibition was Luke Fowler’s film All Divided Selves, which is about radical psychiatrist R.D. Laing. The film culls together moving image from a rich archive of Laing, along with Fowler’s own films, and other archival footage. The imagery is rich, and layered with sounds and bits of music. The film weaves in and out, from visual metaphors that reference the topic to images that are more esoteric. It is a beautiful film, and this exhibition presents a rare chance to see Fowler’s work in Los Angeles. I left feeling very inspired.
