Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne are in town to present their new film TORI AND LOKITA and to introduce and discuss the opening selections in the American Cinematheque’s complete retrospective BROTHERS WITH A MOVIE CAMERA: THE CINEMA OF JEAN-PIERRE AND LUC DARDENNE, screening in Los Feliz and Santa Monica through April 11.
Starring Pablo Schils (Tori) and Joely Mbundu (Lokita) as young immigrants struggling to survive in urban Belgium, TORI AND LOKITA traces a heartrending course, the writer-directors—as always—bearing close witness in their depiction of the clash between the powerless and the pitiless.
The retrospective of wall to wall highlights includes rare local screenings of THE PROMISE (1996)—co-starring one of the Dardennes most steadfast interpreters, Jérémie Renier—FALSCH (1986), and I’M THINKING OF YOU (1992), as well as the four consecutive masterpieces that turn on devastating female performances: LORNA’S SILENCE (2008, starring Arta Dobroshi), THE KID WITH A BIKE (2011, Cécile de France), TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT (2014, Marion Cotillard), and THE UNKNOWN GIRL (2016, Adèle Haenel).
