Back in town for its semi-regular spring visit, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater brings a mixed repertoire of old and new works to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. A highlight for its legion of local fans will be the Los Angeles premiere of Amy Hall Garner’s CENTURY.
In demand with companies such as Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and New York City Ballet, Garner—in her first work for Ailey’s main troupe—has created a tribute to her grandfather on his 100th birthday, set to the music of Count Basie, Ellington, Ray Charles, Cyrus Chestnut, and the Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans.
Given Garner’s performance experience in the Broadway musicals Fosse and Contact—and her assertion that CENTURY also offers a toast to Mr. Ailey and his theatricality—we are anticipating a showstopper.
