DAVID ZWIRNER — 30 YEARS

334

“Do David and I finish one another’s sentences?” asked architect Annabelle Selldorf at an opening week event at David Zwirner’s new Los Angeles space. “No.” But one could say that they finish one another’s buildings, so in tune have they become over the decades as to what is required when giving the blue-chip art bought and sold by Mr. Zwirner a suitable showcase for public (and private) inspection. All of Zwirner’s galleries—in Chelsea, in Tribeca, on the Upper East Side, in London and Hong Kong, and reopening this fall in Paris—have been designed by Selldorf.

A new three-story building in the Melrose Hill district of Los Angeles joins two single-story Zwirner spaces on Western Avenue, centering a destination zone for art lovers—Morán Morán, Sargent’s Daughters, Clearing, and the Brick (formerly LAXART), among others, are also in the neighborhood. On the ground floor a series of very high ceilinged spaces circle the reception area, and the upper floors hold smaller, skylit exhibition rooms, offices, and a large terrace with views from downtown to the Hollywood Hills.

To mark the grand opening, the museum-quality anniversary show DAVID ZWIRNER — 30 YEARS is now open, featuring work by every artist in Zwirner’s program, much of it newly created for the new location. Of particular interest are the artworks included herein.
