In addition to the established art fairs Felix (returning to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel), Frieze Los Angeles (back at the Santa Monica Airport), and The Other Art Fair (in Frogtown), a newcomer joins the scene for L.A. Art Week 2025.
The Post-Fair—named for its venue at the former Main Post Office in downtown Santa Monica—“seeks to simplify the art fair experience by focusing on solo presentations in an iconic venue with a relatively low impact, open plan format.” And admission is only $10.
Along with the fairs, local institutions, galleries, and alternative art spaces are presenting special events, programs, and shows, including…
One Hundred Percent, a “benefit exhibition by and for artists impacted by the Eaton and Palisades fires,” organized by Aram Moshayedi… Coltrane on Coltrane: An Oral History, an evening of music and conversation with vocalist Michelle Coltrane and harpist Brandee Younger on the occasion of the Hammer Museum show Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal… the opening of Earthshaker, an “exhibition, publication, and public program series” featuring artwork by Ana Mendieta, Derek Jarman, and P. Staff at Del Vaz, curated by Jay Ezra Nayssan (the accompanying catalogue includes writings by Eva Hayward, Maxi Wallenhorst, and McKenzie Wark)… Hauser & Wirth’s presentation of the U.S. premiere of Sharon Eyal and George Rouy’s performance work Bodysuit (on the occasion of Rouy’s exhibition The Bleed, Part II)… and (at H & W’s West Hollywood outpost), an exhibition of new work by Charles Gaines—Numbers and Trees, the Tanzanian Baobabs—featuring an opening night conversation with Naima J Keith, Olga Viso, and Gaines…
… a concert by Jeff Parker at the Brick, followed by a conversation/presentation by musician Damon Locks, sculptor Ricky Swallows, and gallerist John Corbett, set amid the Gregg Bordowitz show This Is Not a Love Song… a screening of It Was All a Dream, dream hampton’s “visual memoir reflecting on the dawn of the golden era of Hip Hop” at CAAM…World Without End: The George Washington Carver Project—also at CAAM, co-curated by Cameron Shaw and Yael Lipschutz—which brings the famed agricultural scientist’s paintings, drawings, laboratory equipment, and notebooks together with the work of over thirty contemporary artists… The Screaming Cumulus, Anna Sew Hoy’s first solo exhibition at Commonwealth and Council… a new body of work by Kelly Akashi, at Lisson… an installation of David Hammons 2002 work Concerto in Black and Blue at Hauser & Wirth… Kiko Kostadinov’s presentation of a special performance by Puppies Puppies (Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo)…
Back in town, after a long absence: Hales Gallery’s solo presentation of work by Kay WalkingStick at Frieze is the artist’s first West Coast showing in four decades… and Bruce Nauman (Pasadena Years at Marian Goodman) and Lisa Yuskavage (new paintings at David Zwirner) will both have their first local openings in thirty years… François Pain is in town for a number of events: the exhibition Psychiatry is what Psychiatrists do at Joan his first local institutional show), the launch of the accompanying Semiotext(e) publication (which includes texts by Franco “Bifo” Berardi, John Kelsey, Stefania Pandolfo, AbdouMaliq Simone, Jackie Wang, and Hannah Zeavin), and an evening at 2220 Arts + Archives… Also a first for L.A.: an exhibition of Helmut Lang’s sculpture—What Remains Behind, curated by Neville Wakefield, at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture… So long and farewell: Reena Spaulings Fine Art will present its final exhibition in Los Angeles—Jutta Koether: sTaY WitH mE.
